When fate chooses for you – The story of a rescued dog
Éva never thought that a dog would cause so much tension in her family. When Tamás and Lajos went to the pet store, she was absolutely sure that they would return home with a small, pretty dog. A poodle, a Yorkie – something that fit her ideas, something she could walk down the street with pride.
But when they got home that evening and Éva saw the skinny, mixed-breed dog shivering in the corner, which her son happily hugged, she immediately felt that a huge mistake had been made.
“What is this?! ” she snapped, dropping her bag. “ Tamás! I asked for a proper purebred dog, and you brought me home from a shelter a… one of these…”
The dog crouched on the ground in alarm, as if it knew exactly what was happening.
“Mom, he’s the only one no one wanted! ” Lajos cried. “ Everyone passed him by… but I couldn’t leave him there!” He looked at me, and I knew we had to bring him home.
Eva looked at the dog with disdain.
“And what do I tell my friends when they ask what breed it is? You can’t go out with a dog like that!”
Tamás sighed deeply as he stroked his son’s shoulder.
– Éva, this is not a fashion accessory. She is a living being, whom we are giving a chance for a better life.
But Eva didn’t want to hear about it. She was seething with rage all night. How could this happen? How could her perfect life now depend on such a mixed-breed dog?
He tossed and turned in bed as a plan began to take shape in his mind.
A quiet plan
When everyone was asleep that night, Éva quietly got up. She glanced at the clock: 1:30 a.m. Tamás was fast asleep next to her, and the silence of the house offered the perfect opportunity to carry out her plan.
He crept cautiously into the living room, where the dog was curled up on a blanket and dozing. As he approached, the dog lifted its head, hope gleaming in its brown eyes. One move… all he had to do was grab the leash and walk him out the door. The shelter was less than ten minutes away.
But then a soft, sleepy voice spoke from behind him.
– Mom…?
Éva froze. Lajos stood in the hallway, in his pajamas, with sleepy eyes.
“What are you doing?”
Eva quickly pulled her hand back from the leash.
“I was just… just checking to see if he was okay.”
Lajos slowly walked over and then knelt down next to the dog, who immediately cuddled up to him.
“He chose me, Mom. You know? When we entered the shelter, all the dogs were barking, jumping… but he just looked at me in silence. It was like he knew I was his chance.”
A lump grew in Eva’s throat. She looked at her son, who was fondly petting the dog, and suddenly something occurred to her.
An old memory
He had a dog when he was a child. A small white mix that his grandfather had rescued from the streets. At the time, he didn’t understand why the dog was so special, but he remembered the day he lost it. The pain… the void it left behind.
And now here was his own son, with the same love shining in his eyes. If he took this dog away from him now… how much would he hate him?
Louis then spoke softly.
“You’re not going to take him, are you, Mom?”
Eva sighed.
“If he can stay… then we need to give him a name.”
The little boy’s eyes lit up.
– What about Hope? Because she just got a new chance.
Eva looked down at the dog, who timidly placed his paw on her hand, as if he too had sensed the change.
“Hope… I think that suits him.”
And at that moment, Eva realized: not only had the dog found a home that evening, but she herself had also found a new kind of love.
