When you don’t have enough time or don’t want to spend much, you should decide to dye your hair on your own. But, you must follow certain rules to avoid disappointing results. Here are 6 simple tips to dye your hair at home.
1. Section the hair and begin with the nape
If you want to dye long hair in one color, you should section it into 4 parts – two behind and two in front of the ears. Apply dye from the nape towards the temples. This is due to the fact that the back of the hair is always a bit darker. With the help of this technique, the color on the back of the head will be more vibrant.
After you apply the dye to the entire hair length, don’t gather it. Brush it and leave it loose, but remember to cover your shoulders and back with a cloak or cellophane film beforehand. This way the hair will better absorb the dye.
2. Consider the texture
Hair texture and condition are important factors for quality dyeing. Dense hair will hardly let any dye in the cuticles, turning the shade warmer with a tint of honey or red. Thin and fluffy locks result in a colder shade. So, curly girls are recommended to opt for warm shades. In turn, cold shades (for example, champagne) are advisable for straight hair.
To avoid unpleasant surprises and uneven color, apply a hair conditioner before washing off the dye. It “fixes” the cuticle and won’t let the pigment leave.
3. Don’t be discouraged by a wrong color
If after dyeing the shade didn’t match your expectations, there is an emergency way to reduce its saturation. Apply hair conditioner on the entire length of hair, collect it in a bunch, put on a cap, or wrap your hair in food wrap. Cover this whole structure with a thick towel. After 20 minutes, rinse the hair, wash with shampoo, and then with balsam.
There are more professional methods as well – for example, dye removing products, which help get rid of color you don’t like without damaging the structure of the hair.
4. Consider the length
For hair longer than shoulders make sure to take two packs of dye. By the way, the dye and oxidizer are supposed to be mixed in a plastic container for a reason. Upon contact with metal, the dye will change color.
5. Don’t believe girls from the covers
In real life, girls are not as beautiful as on Instagram or on the covers of glossy magazines. First of all, keep in mind that you won’t get exactly the same color as in the picture. If you choose from permanent dyes, consider darker shades. As a rule, due to the strong pigment, it is well absorbed by the hair making it lighter.
As for semi-permanent dyes, due to the lack of hydrogen peroxide, they don’t wash away the main pigment and don’t get as deep into the cuticle. Most often they are used for hair toning, rather than lightening. The color saturation, in this case, depends on how long you keep the dye on. Therefore, it makes sense to deliberately choose a lighter shade, knowing that eventually, the color will turn a bit darker.
6. Protect your hair and take care after it
Most girls know that dyed hair needs special products to preserve color and require sulfate-free shampoos. In addition, don’t forget about masks – apply them at least twice a week. Also remember, the less often you wash your head, the longer the color pigment will remain. Therefore, consider dry shampoos.
With these tips now, you can dye your hair at home no worse than in a beauty salon. It’s time to tell your friends!
