Can anyone tell me what this is? It’s about 10 inches across.
Answer: It is a telegraph switchboard, with what appears likely to be four lightening arrestor in place….which is typical… circa early 1900’s. about average condition as these go. You’ll see them sell on Ebay occasionally in the $50 to $100 price range. Asking prices seem to start from $200-$2000…probably from uncertainty of what it is they have but they will remain listed/unsold until sellers finally adjust to the market. An average telegraph key, sounder, or relay from this period are more sought after and more collectable due to the smaller sizes and superior workmanship and materials. Even so, if you search “sold” prices, they majority sell under $50 These switchboards do not get as much interest. I like them and have several in my collection.
I feel telegraph antiques should all be much more valuable than the market allows. But I am a confirmed telegraph nut… ..visitors to my home are usually polite but easy to see their lack of interest, I’ll never understand why this wonderful era of technology gets so little interest and remains cold. I think your switchboard is beautiful
