Ariana Grande Gets Emotional While Defending ‘Dangerous’ Weight Loss Comments
Ariana Grande became visibly emotional while discussing the harsh criticism she’s faced over her weight loss.
During an interview with French reporter Sally posted on Thursday, December 5, Grande was asked how she handles the “overwhelming” pressure women face to look “perfect.” Fighting back tears, the 31-year-old pop star responded, “My goodness. I’m not gonna–,” trying not to cry, before saying “Good question.”
After being comforted by her Wicked co-star Cynthia Erivo, Grande explained how challenging it is to shield oneself from the constant commentary about her appearance. Sharing how her experiences with scrutiny have shaped her, the singer said, “I’ve heard every version of it — of what’s wrong with me. And then you fix it, and then it’s wrong for different reasons,” she explained.
The former Nickelodeon actress noted the pressure can feel unbearable, with even simple comments — like a family member remarking on her weight — being damaging. “You look skinnier! What happened? Or you look heavier! What happened?” she said, stressing that regardless of the intent, such remarks are harmful.
Grande went on to express how dangerous it is for people to feel entitled to comment on others’ appearances, citing it as a “dangerous” behavior for both those giving and receiving the commentary. “I think in today’s society, there is a comfortability that we shouldn’t have at all — commenting on others’ looks, appearance, what they think is going on behind the scenes or health or how they present themselves.”
She shared that despite the negative attention, she feels “really lucky” to have a strong support system that helps her navigate the noise. “It’s not invited, so I don’t leave space for it anymore,” she added firmly.
Grande also had an emotional conversation on Thursday with Drew Barrymore on an episode of The Drew Barrymore Show –– this time about the harsh realities of fame. After Grande praised Barrymore for her strength in navigating the “ugly” aspects of the industry, the Scream actor was moved to tears. “I just wanted to say that because I admire you so much,” Grande said, tearing up. “Not only because of your brilliant work, but because of the light that you bring and how happy you make people. That’s really the most important thing, and I had to say that.”
The two stars bonded over their shared experiences as “tremendous people pleasers,” before talking about the importance of setting boundaries to protect one’s mental health.
