If you thought that climate change will only have a serious impact on our weather conditions, you are mistaken! Climate change is not only affecting our lives directly but influencing our diet and food habits as well. There are 9 foods that are predicted to go extinct because of climate change in the upcoming years.
1. Tea
Specialists confirm that the tea sector will be greatly impacted by climate change if no preventive measures are taken. For example, increased vulnerability to insects or lower-quality leaves is just a few problems the industry is going to face. Now that says a lot!
2. Rice
How can rice be a problem you may think? Well, it surely won’t extinct but they’ll come with their own problems! They can become less nutritious because of the rising concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
3. Maple Syrup
According to experts, Maple trees will not have enough snowpack in winter, which will lead to root dieback and reduced shoot growth. Now that’s alarming!
4. Wheat
According to this study, performed by Kansas State University, we are at risk of losing at least 1/4 of our global wheat production. Each degree that the temperature rises, cuts around 6% of it. These are some crazy numbers.
5. Peanuts
The cultivation of peanuts requires a lot more attention to constant temperatures and rain levels than other species, and climate change is making it much more difficult to keep all this under control.
6. Orchard fruits
Extreme heat and sunburn damage can be too severe for orchard trees. As a result, growers can expect a shortage in the quality and amount of fruit.
7. Coffee
Just like tea, even Coffee might just disappear! Leading global coffee companies like Starbucks and Lavazza recognize the severe risks caused by global warming. Around 50% of the global area suitable for coffee production is in danger of being cut by 2050. Sad!
8. Honey
Studies discovered that rising levels of CO2 reduce the protein in pollen, the main food source among bees. In the worst case, this problem can lead to their dying-off since they will fail to get enough nutrition. Pretty bad, right?
9. Chocolate
Extreme weather is not expected to be accompanied by heavy rains. These conditions can negatively impact cocoa production and result in one million fewer tons of powder, truffles, or bars of chocolate per year. Now we have all the reasons to respect the weather, don’t we?
