This defender was forced to leave the field in the 69th minute during Liverpool’s 4-3 victory against Fulham at Anfield last week. Matip appeared to have a knee sprain, but the subsequent scan results confirmed a serious injury requiring surgery.

Confirming the information, Jurgen Klopp explained: “It’s an ACL injury. That’s what I was most worried about from the first second I saw it. Very unfortunate, that’s all.”

Thus, the 32-year-old player may have to miss the rest of the season, and there is even the possibility that he will play his 201st match, also his last for The Reds after 8 seasons, as his contract will expire in the summer.

It is a heavy blow for the former Cameroon international, making his future at the club very uncertain. However, some Liverpool fans on social media believe that he should be offered a one-year contract extension to support him during the recovery period.

A user wrote, “It wouldn’t be surprising if The Reds honored Joel Matip by giving him another year of contract after this injury.” Another person tweeted, “I support this. Love him. He doesn’t deserve to leave like this.”

A third person added, “Look at what he has done for our club, it’s the least we can do.”

Some other opinions showed less sympathy, stating that Liverpool is a “football club, not a charity.”

One fan pointed out, “I love Matip, but they should shake hands and let him go. A loyal servant, but he’s not what he used to be.”

Matip has been with Liverpool since the second season of Klopp’s era, joining on a free transfer from Schalke in 2016. He has been a key figure for The Reds during their most successful period in the 21st century, winning the Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Super Cup, and Champions League, despite being frequently plagued by injuries.
