Pat Nevin believes that Chelsea’s £1 billion squad will need “2 more seasons” before being ready to compete in the Champions League.

Chelsea has spent a significant amount in recent transfer windows, breaking numerous English transfer records in the process. However, their results have been disappointing. The recent defeat to Manchester United has exacerbated their issues, with manager Mauricio Pochettino seemingly struggling to find solutions for the growing list of problems at the club.

Currently sitting in 10th place, Chelsea is 11 points behind the 4th-placed Manchester City. Former Blues star Nevin believes that it will take a few more years for Chelsea to return to contention in the Champions League.

“Last season, I thought buying all these young players was a risky strategy,” Nevin said. “They have very little Premier League experience, and I thought the team would not be good for at least 2 seasons. I still hold that view at this point.”

“In the past, I used to be the CEO, and if I were at Chelsea, I wouldn’t expect this team to make the top 4 this season. Instead, I would expect them to go out, learn, and develop a work ethic. I know that won’t happen overnight.” “Everyone knows this team is worth £1 billion. The expectations of the fans are very high, and the amount spent on the team will always weigh heavily on them. There hasn’t been a moment this season where I thought this is a top 4 team. I never thought about it before the season started.”

“Perhaps in 2 seasons or at the earliest, maybe even the season after that, Chelsea could challenge for titles. Of course, we cannot predict the future. But currently, it seems difficult for Chelsea to make the top 4.”
