Liev Schreiber supports daughter in interview: ‘Kai was always who Kai is’
Actor Liev Schreiber is opening up about his 16-year-old transgender daughter, Kai Schreiber.
In a new interview with Variety published Thursday, the Ray Donovan star reflected on Kai’s journey, sharing that she’s always been true to herself.
“Kai has always been who she is,” Schreiber said.
He went on to recall a meaningful turning point: “Probably the most significant moment was when she asked us to change her pronouns. Honestly, it didn’t feel like such a big shift to me because Kai had expressed her femininity for so long already.”
The conversation comes just ahead of the Ali Forney Center’s A Place at the Table Gala, scheduled for Friday, May 9. According to the center’s website, the organization is dedicated to “saving the lives of LGBTQ+ youth, protecting them from homelessness, and equipping them with the tools to live independently.” Schreiber, his wife Taylor, and Kai are all set to attend the event together.
“This goes beyond simply standing with the trans community,” Schreiber explained. “This is a group of people who lack support, who don’t have access to resources or family protection. Many are rejected by their own loved ones. They’re facing some of the harshest realities of human behavior—and not all of them make it through.”
He emphasized that this reality should stay at the forefront during the fundraising evening. “We’ve got to keep that in mind when we dress up and step into the spotlight,” he said. “What we’re really doing is helping raise money for a community in desperate need.”
Schreiber described Kai, who has started modeling, as “a fighter” and highlighted the significance of her being visible as a transgender woman. “It matters that she can say, ‘I’m trans,’ and proudly show up as herself,” he said.
When asked what advice he might offer to parents of transgender kids, Schreiber was careful not to generalize.
“I can’t pretend to know your background—how you were raised, your beliefs, or spirituality. It’s not my place to tell anyone how to feel about their child,” he explained. “What I can say is this: parenting teenagers is tough no matter what. Trans or not, teens are a handful. You’ll get through it. Kai can be fiery and outspoken, just like any teen.”
Schreiber also shared that he tries not to dwell on political attacks targeting the trans community.
“I try not to give too much space to that fear,” he said. “The world already has enough to be anxious about.”
The actor has three children in total. He shares Kai and 17-year-old Sasha with ex-partner Naomi Watts, and he welcomed daughter Hazel Bee, now 1, with his wife Taylor Schreiber.
